Attention Banner Users. New Look & Feel Coming in July

Banner (Forms) will receive a facelift in mid-July!  The new look & feel will also remove the reliance on JAVA and remove the current browser restrictions.  The update is purely a facelift to the interface, which means that no processes or data will change as a result.  You will still use the same form names (SPRIDEN, etc), but will now have additional ways to access the same forms quicker and easier!

The update to the Banner Forms interface is also referred to as Banner 9.    This update is the foundation for a number of usability updates that will be made available in the coming months.  Enhancements to Banner 9 include a cleaner, more streamlined, and responsive design as well as an additional navigation helper menu (Application Navigator).  With Application Navigator, simply start typing the form name or keyword and you will be presented with a list of matching forms.

Perhaps the most anticipated changes is that Banner Forms will no longer require JAVA, which means that more browsers, such as Google Chrome, will now be supported!

If you are already a Banner user, access to the Banner 9 TEST system is available at https://banner.manhattan.edu using TESTDB02.  Please visit the TEST system to try the new features!  A short 20-minute online tutorial is also available to better explain the new interface.

JasperNet SSO Maintenance - Friday 6/23 10AM

ITS will be performing critical system maintenance on the JasperNet Single Sign On (SSO) system starting Friday 6/23 at 10AM.  After 10AM, anyone already connected to JasperNet services should be able to function normally; however, any new attempts to login to JasperNet services will not be processed.

What is affected?
The SSO authentication system (login) to all JasperNet services will be unavailable after 10AM.  JasperNet services will still be online, however, any new attempts to login after 10AM will not be processed.  Services with a longer timeout, such as Google Apps and Gmail, as well as app-based services will largely be unaffected by this maintenance.

ITS recommends that anyone who needs to access JasperNet services on Friday login BEFORE 10AM.  Services with stricter security policies, such as Banner and Self-Service, will not function if they are allowed to timeout.

Why 10AM on 6/23?
While ITS typically schedules service-affecting maintenance for off-peak periods (such as overnight), the maintenance being performed on Friday requires the support of our software vendor Ellucian and must be done during normal business hours to ensure that the appropriate vendor support personnel are available.  The planned maintenance is the result of an issue experienced during an overnight update performed in May.  Friday 6/23 is the first available window when most of the College is closed but vendor support resources are available.

When will the maintenance be completed?
It is anticipated that the maintenance will take approximately 2 hours.  Since some troubleshooting will be involved, ITS has not defined an end to the maintenance window.  Updates will be posted at ITSblog - http://itsblog.manhattan.edu/

Phishing Attack "Ushering Job This Weekend"

There is another Phishing Scam Circulating with the title "Ushering Job This Weekend".
Please delete this email.  If you did click into it, please follow these instructions to clean your account.

Phishing Attempt - Don’t be Fooled….

Another round of “phishing” attacks have been detected and reported to ITS.  Some users on campus have reported receiving an email message crafted to look like it came from the Provost.  The suspect message includes a PDF attachment that forwards the user to a fake login page to provide their Username and Password to open the file.  While the attacker took the time to identify the Provost as a trusted sender and craft the message to appear to come from the Provost’s account, it is clear from the message “from” address that it did not originate from the Provost, but rather an off-campus email address with the name changed to match.

Screen Shot 2017-06-20 at 3.03.10 PM.png

If you happened to click the message, a “locked” PDF file would appear and forward you to a fake login site to “unlock” the message.  There are several indicators on the fake login site that confirm that the site is not legitimate.

First, all JasperNet users should only provide their password at the “green” login page of secure.manhattan.edu that indicates a secure connection to Manhattan College.

Second, the fake login page indicates that the connection is “Not Secure” and uses a non-Google URL (biosyncpharma-dot-com).

If you encounter this or similar messages, please forward to ITS@manhattan.edu to be validated.

NEVER click on a suspicious attachment and NEVER provide your username or password at a suspicious login page. Beware of unsolicited messages.

COMPLETED - Brief authentication outage this evening, starting around 9:00 PM

There will be a brief outage this evening while ITS performs routine maintenance on the main authentication server. The maintenance will start around 9:00 PM and may last up to an hour.

During the maintenance no new sessions will be able to be created. Basically, you won't be able to log in to your JasperNet account during this time. Any already-open sessions, however, will not be interrupted. For example, if you're already logged into your email before 9:00 PM, you'll still be able to access your email during the maintenance window. Your session will not be destroyed. But if you need to log into your email from a new computer or something, at 9:05 PM, you will not be able to do so until the maintenance is complete.

This blog post will be updated as we have more information and/or updates.

Update: The maintenance was completed around 10:15 PM.

Basic Steps to Online Safety and Security

Follow these six National Cyber Security Alliance recommendations to better protect yourself online and make the Internet more secure for everyone:
  • Fortify each online account or device. Enable the strongest authentication tools available. This might include biometrics, security keys, or unique one-time codes sent to your mobile device. Usernames and passwords are not enough to protect key accounts such as e-mail, banking, and social media.
  • Keep a clean machine. Make sure all software on Internet-connected devices — including PCs, laptops, smartphones, and tablets — are updated regularly to reduce the risk of malware infection.
  • Personal information is like money. Value it. Protect it. Information about you, such as purchase history or location, has value — just like money. Be thoughtful about who receives that information and how it’s collected by apps or websites.
  • When in doubt, throw it out. Cybercriminals often use links to try to steal your personal information. Even if you know the source, if something looks suspicious, delete it.
  • Share with care. Think before posting about yourself and others online. Consider what a post reveals, who might see it, and how it could be perceived now and in the future.
  • Own your online presence. Set the privacy and security settings on websites to your comfort level for information sharing. It’s okay to limit how and with whom you share information.
