We are investigating restoring the missing data at this time

We expect this maintenance to take approximately one hour and apologize for any inconvenience this will cause.

COMPLETED: Generator Test Horan Hall on 5/24 at 10am

UPDATE: The generator test was completed successfully around 3:30pm on 5/24/2017.

Physical Plant will be conducting a generator test in Horan Hall on Wednesday, May 24th at approximately 10am. These tests are conducted throughout the year to ensure the generators function correctly in case Horan Hall loses power for any reason.

This test will last for approximately 15-20 minutes and will affect both the wired and wireless networks in Horan Hall.

Solution for latest RansomWare Attack (WannaCry)

The latest RansomWare attack known as WannaCry impacts Windows machines that are not up to date. 

To prevent your personal Windows machine from getting impacted, please turn off the Windows feature named:

SMB 1.0/CIFS FILE SHARING SUPPORT. 

1. Click on the Search option and search for "Windows Features" and you will see the result as "Turn Windows Feature on or off"

2. Upon clicking the option, the following screen will be prompted:

3. Untick the box and click "OK"

Please Note:  TURNING THIS FEATURE OFF WILL MAKE YOUR COMPUTER RESTART.

To avoid this virus the best practice would be to follow these instructions for Manhattan College Windows PC's and personal Windows PC's.

With Google Hangouts Meet, you can hold impromptu video meetings on the go, virtual training classes around the world, remote interviews, and much more. If you have G Suite Enterprise you can host a Hangouts Meet video meeting for up to 30 people at a time, with no time limit. For G Suite Basic and Business, a video meeting may have up to 25 participants.

Ransomware Alert - How to Stay Safe

A major ransomware cyber attack has been moving through european countries overnight.  The attack spreads through a combination of phishing and vulnerable unpatched Windows systems.

A number of protections are already in place for important JasperNet services such as Moodle and Self-Service, however, it's important to be vigilant when receiving suspicious or unsolicited messages.  While the spread of the attack has slowed, there is an expectation that the same or similar attack will eventually resume.

What is Ransomware?
In a nutshell, ransomware is a cyber attack that "locks" files on your computer (using encryption) and extorts a ransom payment from the victim to the attacker to unlock (unencrypt) the files.

DLS 210 Computer Lab Imaging and PC Removal

Digital Security Basics

Here are some digital security basics everyone should know.

1)     Make sure all your apps are up-to-date

Updates are right at the top of the list of things you can do to stay protected. Along with new features, updates bring important security fixes and improvements. Anything you haven’t used in a long time and hasn’t gotten any updates is worth uninstalling. For everything else: don’t ignore the updates!

2)     Be wary of Bad Links

Don’t just click on something because it promises to show you cute kittens. Always think twice before clicking on a link on a webpage or in an email from someone you don’t know. Check the address behind the link to make sure it’s legit.

3) “password” should never be your password

A good password is your first line of defense. Make sure you’re using a strong password for your accounts, and use different ones for each. 

Now, we know how annoying making a strong password can be. So if you only do one thing: make it long! As in at-least-16-characters long.

Or you can use a password manage, example:  Lastpass.com, they create strong random passwords and can remember them for you. 

4)     Delete sensitive files

Social Security numbers, bank statements, private photos... Leaving these things on your computer is just asking for trouble. Print them out and delete the original file.

There are ways of retrieving deleted files, so make sure you use a secure form of deletion.

Go ahead: try it on some file you were going to delete anyways. 

5)     Or keep them safe

If you need to keep sensitive data, don’t just leave it unprotected.

If you want to keep sensitive documents on the PC, then password-protect them.  Make sure you understand your Sharing Settings in Google Drive.

6) How to best keep your Google type files secure

1. Set a screen lock for your mobile device. Check out Android here and iOS here
2. If you use an iOS device, put a passcode on the Google Drive app
3. Understand sharing settings for Google Drive and keep your files private (only you can access)

Google has indicated that they have "resolved" the issue.  The web address that hosted the malicious application has been disabled.

ITS is continuing work to identify affected manhattan.edu users and remove the malicious application from the users' "Authorized Apps".  Affected accounts may be temporarily suspended during these remediation steps.

Client Services Hours for Graduation

Please note that the Client Services Offices will be opened during graduation for our Normal Summer hours of 9AM - 4:30PM.  Priority support will be provided to Graduation.  All other requests may be delayed.

Microsoft has Ended Support for Skype TV Applications

As of June 2016, Microsoft has ended support for all Skype TV applications.  This includes the Logitech camera that we have installed in several locations on campus.

In summary, Microsoft is only supporting Smartphone, Tablet, and PC Skype applications.

Computer Lab Software Request Deadline for Fall 2017 is May 12, 2017

If you would like to request an upgrade of a software already installed in the computer labs or if you would like us to install a new software in the computer labs on campus, please fully read through the information on the link provided and fill out the Software Request form here. (click the big green box that says “Request Service”)

Note that software listed here is already slated to be installed, it is not necessary to submit requests for software, unless updating to a new version.

Please note that fully completed forms are required for any change to the labs, even for free software. All software installation media and licenses are also required by the due date.

Requests for the Fall 2017 semester should be submitted by May 12, 2017. Requests submitted after the deadline may not be installed in the labs for the Fall 2017 semester. This is because we need time to develop an installation procedure and test the software in the lab environment before deploying the software. We also require a number of weeks to deploy the lab images across campus, which means our solutions need to be complete and tested several weeks prior to classes beginning.
