New Meet Features Coming To Help Moderate and Engage Students!

Meet features help engage students and moderate classes

This year, as educators conducted class remotely, the equivalent of over 1,300 years of learning took place each day on Google Meet. With more than 140 million educators and students now using G Suite for Education worldwide to create, collaborate and communicate, many more schools and educators are using Meet to stay connected. [Google is] excited to share some Meet features that will be launching later this year to help educators improve moderation and engagement in remote or hybrid learning environments.

GridView Issue Update

ITS has been monitoring the Google Meet GridView extension problem. At this point we have identified the main problem being that some users have more than one GridView extension installed. Please reference these instructions for how to remove the second extension.

This double extension can be caused if you are using different gmail accounts. ITS recommends that you use Chrome profiles to prevent this from happening. Chrome profiles help to keep all of your different gmail accounts and apps separate. For more information about managing profiles please refer to the below links.

Users have also reported having issues viewing all the participants of a meeting during the meet. This could be because the GridView has many different viewing settings and needs to be tailored to the users viewing needs. For more information about the viewing features of the GridView check out this article.

Friendly Reminder: 4 Brand New Google Meet Features

This is a friendly reminder that Google is rolling out 4 new top requested features. These new features will help ensure that your future Google Meets run seamlessly and effortlessly.  You will be able to focus more on your meeting now!

1. Tiled layouts for larger calls. You can now see 10+ people in a tiled view during your meetings.

2. Present higher-quality video content with audio. This means that you will now be able to more successfully show a video with audio while you are presenting to a meeting. This can be done by now selecting "present a Chrome tab" when sharing your screen.

3. Low light mode. Google Meet can now auto adjust your video to make you more visible when you are in sub-optimal lighting conditions. This is currently being rolled out for smart phone users but will become available to web users in the future.

4. Noise cancellation. Meet can now filter out some background noises such as the dog barking or the sound of someone typing while you are in the meeting.

These features will be rolled out within the next couple of weeks, with some users possibly already having access to them. For more information on these features and their timelines,  please visit this link

Top 5 Reasons Why Google Hangouts Meet Is Best For Remote Learning/Working

Google Hangouts Meet and Google Hangouts Classic are two very useful tools to allow live interactive meetings. However during this time, ITS would like to recommend that you use Google Hangouts Meet for all of your remote working/teaching sessions. ITS is only supporting Google Hangouts Meet issues. Please consider the following when you are setting up a large online video conference meeting.

meet.google.com looks like this when you type in the url:

1. Google Hangouts Meet is the preferred meeting option because it allows you to invite up to 100 people to a meeting where Hangouts only allows you to invite up to 10 people. Using Google Hangouts Meet ensures that every invited participant in your meeting will be able to join without getting kicked out due to capacity.

2. You are able to record your meeting so that you can review it later and/or share it with others. This recording is downloaded into your Google Drive once the recording is complete.

3. Google Hangouts Meet allows you to share your screen and still keep your shared frame at the same time. This means that your participants will be able to see your screen and you or whatever you have in the frame at the same time.

4. You can turn on on Captions using Google Hangouts Meet. This means people will be able to both see and hear what you are saying.

5. Additionally you can also change the layout of your screen during the video conference to adjust to the type of screen you need. This means that you can change your layout to show Questions and Comments on the side or make your frame the large one and others who have joined smaller. This can be a useful tool if you are in a meeting with more than 5 people.
