Top 5 Reasons Why Google Hangouts Meet Is Best For Remote Learning/Working

Google Hangouts Meet and Google Hangouts Classic are two very useful tools to allow live interactive meetings. However during this time, ITS would like to recommend that you use Google Hangouts Meet for all of your remote working/teaching sessions. ITS is only supporting Google Hangouts Meet issues. Please consider the following when you are setting up a large online video conference meeting.

meet.google.com looks like this when you type in the url:

1. Google Hangouts Meet is the preferred meeting option because it allows you to invite up to 100 people to a meeting where Hangouts only allows you to invite up to 10 people. Using Google Hangouts Meet ensures that every invited participant in your meeting will be able to join without getting kicked out due to capacity.

2. You are able to record your meeting so that you can review it later and/or share it with others. This recording is downloaded into your Google Drive once the recording is complete.

3. Google Hangouts Meet allows you to share your screen and still keep your shared frame at the same time. This means that your participants will be able to see your screen and you or whatever you have in the frame at the same time.

4. You can turn on on Captions using Google Hangouts Meet. This means people will be able to both see and hear what you are saying.

5. Additionally you can also change the layout of your screen during the video conference to adjust to the type of screen you need. This means that you can change your layout to show Questions and Comments on the side or make your frame the large one and others who have joined smaller. This can be a useful tool if you are in a meeting with more than 5 people.

Google Summer Collaboration Challenge Week 7

Video Conferencing Options with Google Calendar

Manhattan College users have the option to add conferencing options to Calendar Events. When creating an event in Google Calendar, make sure to set the conferencing option to Hangouts Meet. This will associate a meeting code with that event, allowing you and other people to join a conference using the invitation sent to them or the meeting code. Note that with G Suite for Education, you can have up to 25 people simultaneously connected to the meeting.

Hangouts Meet Dial In Option

A feature that was recently added is the option for Dialing into a Hangouts Meet via telephone. When a calendar event is created with the Hangouts Meet conferencing option selected, the Dial In option will automatically be enabled. Along with the meeting code, you will also find a telephone number and pin number, which will be used to enter a video conference using only a telephone. This is especially useful when you’re away from your computer, like if you're commuting or don't have a data connection, and you need to call into your Meetings while on the go.

Note that this dial-in feature uses an international phone number, which allows meeting participants in other countries to join the meeting.

Please this article for more information about Hangouts Meet with Dial In Option.

Assignment: Create an event with the Hangouts Meet conferencing option and join the meeting and invite a friend to join using the dial in option.

Start using Hangouts Chat right now

Beginning April 16, 2019, Google Hangouts Chat and Meet together are the next version of Hangouts. They will replace the original version (classic Hangouts) in G Suite.

Classic Hangouts will be retired for all G Suite customers starting in October 2019 and all remaining users will be transitioned to Chat.

This means all classic Hangouts users can also use Chat at chat.google.com or by installing the Chat mobile or computer apps.

Hangouts Chat is for continuous text chat with your team. Hangouts Chat was implemented by many people who transitioned from classic Hangouts. The chat app is filled with many features to work productively. Google has included a bot it calls @meet that can look at the schedules of anybody in a group chat and automatically suggest a meeting time then schedule it directly in Google Calendar. For more information review Get Started with Bots! ITS blog post.
Hangouts Meet is how teams communicate using video calls, one can easily hold video meetings with people inside or outside their organization.

Hangouts Chat and Hangouts Meet are the next generation of Hangouts that focus on team communication. Later this year, Google will  transition classic Hangouts users to Chat and Meet.

Classic Hangouts Timeline:

Classic Hangouts is a Google video messaging app. It is being phased out and will be retired for all G Suite customers in October 2019.

For more information review material from Google on these apps: Switching from classic Hangouts to Hangouts Meet.

This feature will automatically be selected when you select the Hangouts Meet conferencing option while creating a calendar event in Google Calendar.
Note that this dial-in feature uses an international phone number, which allows meeting participants in other countries to join the meeting.
