"Vector LMS, Higher Education Edition Online Learning" is not a phishing attack

Between March 2nd 11:45PM and March 3rd 12:30AM, safecolleges.com sent ~1100 emails to our community. These emails are legitimately from a vendor that Human Resources does business with.

Gmail displays a warning banner with a convenient "report phishing" button for most of the safecolleges.com emails.

Do not report these emails as phishing attempts. This email campaign helps the college comply with New York State law regarding sexual harassment.

Payroll Phishing Campaign

A malicious actor is sending paycheck picture attachments via email from a forged email address, payrolldepartment@manhattan.edu. An example email is included below.

These emails are "unauthenticated" by which that means the sending SMTP (email) server is not allowed to send as any @manhattan.edu address. ITS prevents delivery of such emails to ITS managed @manhattan.edu accounts. ITS also uses DMARC to notify all receiving SMTP (email) servers to be as careful as possible with unauthenticated @manhattan.edu emails. Unfortunately, DMARC is just a suggestion and not a command. So unauthenticated @manhattan.edu emails may still be delivered to phishing targets.

Campus-Wide Wifi Upgrade - 2/27-2/28

UPDATE: This maintenance has been canceled.

In order to maintain a safe, secure, and reliable wireless network, ITS will be upgrading core equipment of our wireless infrastructure. This will start on February 27th at 10pm and is expected to last until February 28th at 3am. This maintenance will cause sporadic outages during the duration of the maintenance period and will affect devices that generally connect to the wireless network, including Kramer devices in classrooms. This maintenance will not affect the wired networks across campus.

We apologize for any inconvenience that this may cause. If you have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to contact ITS by emailing its@manhattan.edu.

Google Drive "Shared with me" Sorting Issue

It has been brought to our attention that there is an issue with sorting by date in the "Shared with me" section of Google Drive. We have reached out to Google support and they informed us that this is a Global issue being worked on by their engineering team. We were not provided a timeline for resolution. We were informed that Google would be emailing everyone when the issue is resolved.

Friendly Reminder: Back Up Your Data

With the convenience of the cloud and apps like Google Drive, it’s pretty easy to forget to back up your data. This is just a friendly reminder to do so!

Data on Google Drive:

Make sure that you have all of your data backed up either on your hard drive, a storage device, or a separate cloud storage service.

File Streaming:

If you are using Drive File Stream, it is very important that you are regularly checking drive.google.com to make sure that your data is syncing/saving properly.

Once you’re logged into your google drive via web browser make sure that any files you worked on using drive file stream are present and up to date. You can access your drive via file stream or web browser on any device

Losing data can be incredibly stressful, but it is preventable! Here are some previously shared tips:

  • Your critical data should never reside in a single place.
  • The ideal backup strategy will typically include both an online backup service (Google Drive) to ensure your data is secure no matter what happens to your mobile device or computer.
  • Running consistent, automatic backups is a straightforward process that will take a little time to set up and will require even less to maintain.
  • Backups can be configured to run in real time when files on your computer are changed.
  • Routinely test your backup solution to ensure you can recover your data in the event that you do actually need to restore from a backup.
If you have any questions or concerns about this please reference our knowledge base articles or contact the ITS Help Desk for further assistance!
